Connectivity Improvements In Satellite And Telecommunications Systems

18 May

I remember my first satellite television dish. It spanned the entire front yard. It frightened the dog, small children, elderly neighbors, and local law enforcement had some questions. “Is that thing transmitting missile technology secrets to your Soviet masters?” and “Your satellite dish has blotted out the sun. Lex Luthor would be proud.” spring to mind as objections issued by civic-minded fellows. The great dish stood like the pyramid at Giza, dominating the landscape, and depriving my lawn of precious sunlight. We got rid of the monster sometime last year, and for all I know, it adorns some third-world rooftop even now, drawing in precious, precious digital signals to otherwise deprived households.

Improvements in satellite and telecommunications systems has rendered my massive satellite dish, once my pride and joy, thoroughly obsolete. Today’s satellites and telecommunications systems have outpaced developments in fiber optic networks, and deliver high quality, high definition pictures, video and audio any where in the world at a fraction of the price and space required by yesterday’s technology. Gone are the vast telecommunications arrays of our ancestors, replaced by small receivers and smaller dishes, incongruously delivering fast digital signals at a fraction of the cost paid by consumers just a few years past.
